Bustamante's parents had histories of drug use. Her mother frequently overdosed in front of her daughter. Eventually, child services removed Alyssa from the custody and put her in the custody of her grandmother. Despite living with a loving grandmother, Alyssa still had a darkness in her. She had violent and suicidal thoughts and even once tried to commit suicide by swallowing a bottle of pills when she was 13. She was afterwards prescribed anti-depressants and saw several therapists. While Alyssa seemed like a good person with good grades, in private her dark side came out. She cut herself and dealt in gothic-style morbid fascinations. She would cut on herself the word HATE but also the 1960s peace symbol. At the time of her arrest, Alyssa had over self-inflicted 300 cuts on her body, along with burn marks and bites. Online, she listed her hobbies as cutting and "killing people". While Alyssa did talk about killing people to her group of friends, unfortunately they didn't take her seriously.
Elizabeth Olten was friends with Alyssa's half-sister. Alyssa picked Olten as a perfect target of opportunity for her dark, murderous fantasies.
In October 2009, Alyssa prepared herself for murder by digging up a grave.
